Moshimo Mindfulness
Ask yourself, “What if?”—and let this glowing neon reminder inspire you to explore new possibilities with curiosity and intention.
On Monday morning, we sat down at もしも Cafe + Space here in Hayama. The name is fitting because もしも (moshimo) means “What if?” in Japanese—a question that has been on my mind a lot since becoming a coach.
This month, I’m running an experiment, a shared journey to explore the “what ifs” that echo in our minds.
What if we began our week with presence instead of pressure?
What if we practiced non-judgmental stillness, together?
What if we could create a dedicated space for calm within our local community?
Our first session was a small gathering of three. This gave us plenty of time to meditate, reflect, and share our thoughts. We explored the difference between mindfulness and meditation, discussed various approaches, and made sure the session was accessible to everyone, from experienced practitioners to complete beginners.
We each set our intentions for the week ahead, centering on being grounded, gentle, and teinei (丁寧)—another beautiful Japanese word I love, which means to do things with care, thoughtfulness, and precision.
Meditation is a powerful tool to cultivate the self-awareness and compassion we need as creative leaders, builders, and human beings. And community is crucial in fostering resilience and innovation.
So, my final "what if" was this: What if I combined them both?
This October is our month to explore the answers together.
